South Dakota has a record setting pheasant harvest in 2024!
Pheasant hunting in Aberdeen, South Dakota, saw a banner year, contributing significantly to what has been reported as the highest pheasant harvest in over a decade. According to a recent news release from the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) Department, more than 1.3 million roosters were harvested across the state during the hunting season—marking the largest pheasant harvest in the past 13 years. Aberdeen, known as one of the premier pheasant hunting destinations in the country, played a major role in this success.
In addition to the wild harvest, hunters also took approximately 380,000 pheasants from regulated private shooting preserves, many of which are located across the state. These preserves offer an extended season and controlled conditions that help support consistent bird populations and quality hunting experiences.
Data from the 2024–2025 season shows that hunters averaged about nine birds per person statewide. Local guides and outfitters in Aberdeen have noted high bird numbers, favorable weather conditions, and strong habitat as key factors driving last year’s exceptional harvest. This year is set to repeat or beat last year’s numbers! Public and private lands in the region saw high levels of activity, with hunters traveling from across the country to experience the famed South Dakota pheasant opener and take part in the long-standing hunting traditions the region is known for.
With abundant CRP fields, crop edges, and dedicated wildlife habitat programs, Aberdeen continues to solidify its reputation as a must-visit location for upland bird hunters seeking both quantity and quality in their pursuit of pheasants. Aberdeen is also home of the public access program with the Aberdeen Pheasant Coalition.
